The 2024 high school football finals begin Thursday with four championship games across Divisions 4-7 at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisconsin.

Story of the first half is the weather
Neither team is doing much with the football, and the snow and wind has a lot to do with it. The teams have combined for 164 yards of total offense, just 15 of which are passing yards.

Edgar took advantage of a fumble recovery and blocked kick to cash in short fields with touchdowns, and that's the difference in the game. Potosi/Cassville recovered a fumble but couldn't advance the ball; the wing-T had not been effective against Edgar thus far.

P/C is 0-for-5 on third down and 0-for-2 on fourth down. But they're not out of it yet; they just need to find some literal footing.

Corey Koeppl and Will Hackel combined on a sack in that series for a short loss. P/C just hasn't been able to sustain anything on offense, and the only thing keeping this manageable is that Edgar has failed on both its conversion attempts. Still 12-0.

Edgar was on the move, but a fumbled snap allowed Potosi/Cassville to leap on it and re-take possession on the Edgar 36-yard line. It's Aiden Uppena, the honorable-mention all-state offensive lineman, who comes away with it, and it's the third ball on the ground in this snowy first half (one was negated by a penalty).

Potosi/Cassville has just one fewer yard than Edgar and has run seven more plays, but short fields have allowed the Wildcats to take a 12-0 lead at the end of the first quarter in the wind and snow at Camp Randall Stadium.

It's P/C's turn to punt after a big third-down stop from Edgar's Leyton Schuett, who stopped Joe Haas short by a yard after a pitch play looked like it was set up to gain more than enough to pick up the 3rd and 3.
 

The punt is a bad one, partially blocked by Preston Erickson after the snap was bobbled, and now the Wildcats have amazing field position yet again, with the ball at the Potosi/Cassville 23-yard line.

Just as I was wondering if punting was even possible for high-school kids in this weather ... Edgar shows it's perfectly do-able.
 

Dakota Ellenbecker got a very friendly bounce and wound up landing the ball down at the Potosi/Cassville 11-yard line, good for a 46-yard punt in adverse conditions. Edgar quarterback Tucker Streit had nothing doing on third down and wound up shot putting the ball out of bounds as he moved toward the sideline, necessitating the punt after a three-and out.

It could be a bit of a field position game, and Edgar has the early advantage with the 6-0 lead in the final minutes of the first quarter.

Maverick Butt goes untouched around the left edge for a 12-yard touchdown, one play after Butt wound up passing the ball that was hauled in by Leyton Schuett on a jump ball. So that's one big defensive play and one big offensive play for Schuett in short order, followed by a score.

The two-point conversion is once again no good; quarterback Tucker Streit was brought down by Oliver Post in the backfield. But in these conditions, a two-score lead feels like a lot as the first quarter comes close to an end.
